in San Angelo's Donut Romance
Donutopia is by far the best donut shop in town. Not only do they taste amazing, but their variety is incredible.

I just wanted to say thank you for trying to help this young family find their loved one. It was beginning to look like no one cared. God bless you.
in King and Queen Take Reign at Lake View's Homecoming
Unfortunately, Lake View didn't win last night. They put up a fight, but Snyder won.
We call them "crack donuts" at work for a reason... they are addictive! Surely there is no real nutritional value in consuming a sugar covered piece of dough that has been fried in animal fat. Ta heck with nutrition... we can't resist the warm, gooey, melty, sugary experience we get from eating a donut, or two, or three!
What happens to donuts that are left on the shelf at the end of the day? Sad to think they are just thrown out with the rest of the trash. (sigh!)

in Do You Have Trash Can Envy?
nice comments. One of my observations is that after the trash is dumped in the truck the cans are left unsecured on the ground in the middle of my alley.by the very company that wants even less hands on service. no one will benefit but the investors in republic trash. there is no room in the streets that have alleys for all these cans. when there are the occasional thunder storm here who will get the cans returned to the proper place when they all at the end of the street. the big blue cans do have serial numbers so we will be able to locate them when they go missing, one more thing we will have to do. and Illegal dumping will surely increase around the city

Go George Go! Great to see you receive some recognition!
Chelsea, one important point overlooked in your piece on trash cans today: a key point in the negotiations for trash service is pricing. Unless there’s a competitive bidding process, our citizens won’t get the best possible service options or pricing. Letting the contract expire and going through the bidding process will yield the greatest value to citizens; it’s the best approach from a fiscal and a service perspective.
That said, we haven’t pushed for expansion of the pilot program, understanding that it would be unfair to ask Republic to make that investment if they don’t have a long-term contract to be the City’s provider.
in Obamacare Slams the City of San Angelo Budget
I really appreciated the half-cent property tax analogy. That made it very relatable. Of course, the argument for increasing the city's cost is to actually make the insurance plan affordable (Affordable Care Act, after all) to the insured. While the single/no-dependent rate is quite a bargain, the family rate jumps up rather dramatically, especially for some of the low-wage city employees.
My initial reaction to the use of "Obamacare" was akin to VWLover - it is most often used as a pejorative by its opponents, but since the President has embraced the term publicly it's hard to object to its use. It still feels weird, as it takes this large and complex piece of legislation, based on Heritage Foundation principles and old Clinton-era ideas and makes it sound like one person deserves all the credit or blame.
in Missing, Dead or On-The-Run: Where is Brandon Lawson?
Let me start by saying Brandon's mother can barely make it thru her day to day life she is so upset, Brandon's father has been just as grief stricken and they make it on auto pilot. Kyle is working full time in the oilfield, and has a family at home, his grandparents have made numerous trips down here to try to get this in the media. I'm sorry if his family isn't taking the time to update their Facebook status so you can read about their heartache. Also I would like to add that these searches cost money, something Ladessa does not have, she chartered 3 plane searched paid for out of her own pocket. Search teams if they are not volunteering (hard to find) can cost thousands of dollars. If at anytime there were inconsistencies it was only because this was the only form of media available to this family and trying to get it all out to the public quickly and if it was found something was posted that was not correct it was immediately corrected. Posts that were harassing, mean spirited, hurtful (and yes there were many) were deleted as were posts tht were questions that had been answered no less than 10 times. It's easy to sit back and think of it were your son, father, husband, that you would go to earths ends, the sad reality is that when adults go missing it is an uphill battle the entire way. Brandon has been gone for 6 weeks and look at how long it took to get in the media, and also at the response from some of te comments here. What is to doubt? This man called 911, he was bleeding, and he is missing. I cant understand why people are so hard on Ladessa she has done everything in her power, sold almost everything she owns to feed her kids, charter planes, and searhed those fields herself. Why not just offer support to a stranger? She spent 4 weeks in San Angelo after this happened completely alone after family had to go home, other than one person she had nobody to turn to, so imagine what that would feel like before you pass judgement on her. If it hasn't been for her persistence some people would never know we have a misisng resident of San Angelo.
"Well, currently, the only thing holding the entire city back from enjoying the services of the fancy blue trash bins is a sluggish City Council."
Is this the same contract that prevents us from using our own trash cans and only allows us to have 1 or 2 blue ones (unless we want to pay extra). If this is the same decision that the city council has been sluggish on, then good for them. What if I have alot of trash that week? What if I do some spring cleaning and have alot to throw away? Do I just have to let it stink up my garage until they pick up the current load? I've seen too many of these subsidized trash contracts in other cities, and this is what it comes to.
"The arm then does the lifting—that used to be the duty of two trash men" It definitely sounds like the same types of contracts I've seen in other cities. The downside? It's cheaper on the trash companies to not have to hire employees anymore. One person in the truck, automatic arm does the lifting. Cheaper on the trash companies, harder on any citizen who might want to exceed their trash can capacity or dispose of anything that doesn't fit in the can.
"Another upside? The trash carts are picked up next to the carports of houses rather than in the alleys" Most of us who have alleys really like the fact that we don't have to display GIANT BRIGHT BLUE EYESORES OF TRASH proudly in front of our houses.
"most drivers can attest to the fact that the barrels are in fact only rarely caged." Then give the owners of the trash cans citations. I'm sure they'll secure them very quickly. If you buy nice quality trash cans just like the "Free with strings attached" blue cans that Republic provides, then the wind won't blow those away.
"Well, currently, the only thing holding the entire city back from enjoying the services of the fancy blue trash bins is a sluggish City Council." So....I see you have plenty of quotes from Republic Services, did you give the city council a chance to defend their actions? No, no you didn't, or you would've put "The San Angelo City Council has declined to comment."
Please correct me if I'm wrong, if they've changed the proposal since the last time I've heard/read it, then I'd love to know that I'm wrong about this. But if this is the same thing they've been trying to get passed for years now, I'm afraid the "upsides" are only for the trash company, not for the citizens.
This is the most irresponsibly biased article I've seen in a long time. Did the trash company sponsor this article? Maybe a little kickback somehow? Shame on you, San Angelo LIVE. There's no investigative journalism/reporting here. All you're doing is pointing out the benefits, and not the possible/probable consequences. Nothing is for free. The trash company has ulterior motives here, I assure you.
Do I have trash can envy? Absolutely not.
This story from the beginning has been strange, and inconsistencies of stories and timelines posted on the "Help find Brandon Lawson" FB page have changed several times....you are the FIRST and ONLY media outlet that has run this story in the weeks he's been missing, and ppl from the page have begged for media attention....I also find it odd that his common law wife is the only one posting daily about his missing Status on FB....His brother, mother and other family members have posted little, if anything about him being missing....I feel someone is covering something up, or hiding something...Also on "Help find Brandon Lawson" Facebook page, people are talking and asking valid questions, and getting banned, blocked and deleted for doing so...The story of what happened leading up to Brandon's missing status has changed several times over the past few weeks, posts and comments from Ladessa have been removed, and stories keep changing....I'm sorry, but if this were MY son, brother, husband, cousin or nephew, I'd be walking thru fire to find him...
Very interesting story.
